York Menu

York is the second most visited city in the UK after London and is home to some of the most beautiful and important historic buildings on earth, but be warned, as well as being the North's spiritual capital for the last 2000 years, York is also Europe's most haunted city! Whilst it may seem traditional and historic by day, boasting incredible city walls and an intricate, world-famous minster, don't be fooled - at night, York really does come to life with partygoers who head out to the city's fantastic pubs, clubs and bars every weekend.

Your guide to hen nights in York

There's so much going on, from the 5 resident breweries to the packed annual calendar of events, you can be sure that your weekend will be action-packed from start to finish! GoHen have a fantastic selection of evening activities to try out in York too, from our sexy hen hosts who are ready to wait on you hand and foot to our murder mystery night which will have you guessing right 'til the end, as well as a unique river disco cruise or limousine ride. York just about has it all - it's a stunning, magical city rich in history, with a fun, lively and quirky nightlife scene which will keep your hen group talking for weeks to come!

Bars and Pubs

On Friday and Saturday nights, the bars and pubs of York buzz with life and cater not only to those who want to try out cheap and cheerful tipples, but also to a more mature, well-heeled crowd, meaning that a wide variety of drinking hotspots are to be found around the city, from classy cocktail bars to cosy Yorkshire pubs and chain names serving up all of your favourites. The main party area is centred around the George Hudson Street area and is home to bars and pubs which are always lively as well as some of the most happening clubs. Get down to some good old-fashioned cheese music and take advantage of the best drinks deals in the city. Look up The Parish, a beautifully decorated bar which is housed in a breathtaking old church or The Artful Dodger on Micklegate Street, a wonderfully whimsical independent and free house pub which is well worth a visit. When you're in the market for something a little more stylish, however, it's recommended that you head 'north of the river'. Cross the River Ouse by Bridge Street and sip on yummy cocktails at York's wonderful riverside branch of Pitcher & Piano, sit outside at the continental-feeling Lucia wine bar or the Vudu Lounge, a beautiful premier cocktail and champagne bar. With riverside terraces and wine bars to rival continental Europe, York really is a cracking place to indulge in a few of your favourite tipples!

Love York

Because it's always popular with tourists and families, there's no end of amusements in York after dark even when you don't feel like hitting the clubs and bars. York Minster is pretty hard to miss by day, but do go and have another peek at night, as it looks breathtaking when lit up in the twilight. Make the most of York's totally haunted reputation too and go on a bone-chilling guided ghost tour - we offer a fantastic tour which will take you all over town to visit the best spooks around! Certainly not for the faint-hearted... When you feel like chilling out in front of a great show, visit the independent grade two listed Grand Opera House for ballet, musicals and opera or famously high quality shows at the Theatre Royal, which was established an incredible 150 years ago.

Getting Around York

North of the river Ouse and within the city walls, cars are banned during the day and driving is strongly discouraged, so although taxis are available in the evenings, it's highly recommended that you and the girls get where you need to be on foot - all of GoHen's accommodation is central, making getting out and about at night a cinch.

Party life in York

When it comes to clubbing and nightlife, York really is divided by the river Ouse, separating awesome cheese and pop in the south from cool chart and alternative north of the river - you can be sure of finding tunes for even the fussiest of hens to get on down to! One of the biggest and best clubs in York offers an incredible 4 different rooms which all blast out fabulous and different music genres, such as house, electro and hip hop all under one roof. They also host huge acts like Tempah T, Ms Dynamite and Hed Kandi year round. Catch world-class Ministry of Sound club nights in the city too and up to date, fresh new music. York also does a fantastic trade in cheese, which we're sure you and your fun-loving hen group will be pleased to find out! Dig out your sparkliest dress, bust some killer 70s grooves and hit the dance floor to some authentic, top quality disco. Super cheesy 80s hits are on the menu too - get up on the revolving dance floor and let everybody know who's the one and only! Modern pop and cheese hits are everywhere too, so you're guaranteed some great laughs when you're out on the tiles in York, a city whose nightlife most definitely doesn't take itself too seriously.

York Tipples

There's a watering hole to suit every occasion in York! All over Yorkshire, real ales are very popular and amongst the best in the country, so give one a try in the cosy and unique Lendal Cellars. Sit down in the ancient cellar when it's chilly or out in the beer garden when the sun shines - it's rumoured to be the city's oldest pub too. If you don't mind sharing your pint with a poltergeist, then pitch up at The Golden Fleece, the UK's most haunted pub, as featured on TV's 'Most Haunted'. Scary stuff! For a taste of Latin America, visit Bobo Lobo on Stoneygate for great chilled out music and yummy cocktails, both of the traditional variety and those inspired by South American countries, such as a 'Millionaire's Mojito', which includes champagne and the delicious, fresh-tasting 'Girl from Ipanema'. The Evil Eye bar, also on Stoneygate, is a really unique place to visit of an evening. A homage to travel and mysticism, you and the girls can sit amongst beautiful artefacts from all over the globe and try out some of the bar's own zanily named signature mixes from an absolutely huge and very impressive menu of 'evil' shots and mixed drinks! 'Pirate's Passion', 'Murder in a Hurricane' and the 'Drunk Monk' are all worth trying based on the name alone, surely! Pubs and bars in York are often unique and above all, most certainly never boring. Everyone can try out something new over the course of the weekend and perhaps even uncover a new favourite.

York Bites

Not so long ago, the only places to eat in York were a couple of overpriced, stuffy restaurants or tea rooms full of sticky cakes. Luckily, things have changed in recent years and now the city is well populated not only by good, honest Yorkshire cooking but also by European restaurants which serve fresh, tasty, modern food - and we're delighted to report that the retro tea rooms and sticky cakes are here to stay! Tuck into French cuisine at the popular Cote Brasserie on Low Petergate or Rustique, located on Castlegate for some tasty dining on a special night with your hens. There's something for everyone, as the city's range of cuisines goes to prove. Tuck into irresistible burgers and fries in American style Hickory's, or enjoy Japanese, Indian, Italian, Indonesian and Thai amongst many others across town. Good British food is never far away in York, so make a beeline for classy Melton's Restaurant and order 'The Whole Hog', consisting of elements from all the best bits of a delicious Yorkshire pig or the outstanding Limehouse Restaurant run by award-winning local 'food heroes'. Undoubtedly, one of the main highlights of dining in York centres around one thing - cake. Indulge in the best afternoon tea you'll ever try or a top quality evening meal when you're finally sick of sweet treats. If your sweet tooth isn't tired yet, a slice of traditional rosewater curd tart or sticky ginger parkin are tasty treats not to be passed up in a hurry!
