Wedding Cake

Ben Fullard – Ben The Cake Man

British Young Chef of the Year two years running Ben went on to work in a number of Michelin starred restaurants before following his true passion… Cake.

What is your top tip for couples selecting their wedding cake designer?

Trust your gut: listen to recommendations and pick someone who makes you feel comfortable. Call the designer up and chat to them, don’t email them, this will give both sides a mutual understanding. Picking a wedding cake designer is very personal; this first introduction is best not done by email.

How much should people budget for a wedding cake?

In my years of experience two things will dictate the price of a cake;
Firstly, the number of portions required and, secondly, the amount of detail and work involved.

What is the current trend in wedding cakes?

Of course there are trends but trends come and go. I am seeing vintage become more rustic, “woodland themes” metallics and goodbye to cup cakes. However a couple shouldn’t worry about trends, if they choose a good cake designer the designer will incorporate the trends into their ideas.

What is the one thing you’ve seen at a wedding that has really struck you as a great idea?

I have seen a lot of brilliant ideas but sometimes the best are the simplest. Provide fun umbrellas, fab for smokers and a fab photo opportunity for the photographer (practical and fun).
A Polaroid camera and a pin board at the entrance for all of the guests to take selfies. Saw this and it looked amazing!
