What’s On-Trend for 2021 in Wedding Make-Up?

Made Up by Cathryn

“Over the last few years, we have seen a real shift from heavy Instagram make-up styles to more natural looks, which really focus on the star of the show glowing with healthy-looking, radiant skin.

“Brides want to be wearing make-up, but they want it to look effortless and radiant. Make-up brands are really reacting to this trend and this fits nicely with my classic, timeless and elegant styling which I am super passionate about.

“I want my brides to look back in years to come and be happy that the look wasn’t too overly trendy and retained a nice classic vibe.”

Ganga

“With this pandemic, we’re seeing everyone, including A-list celebrities, go bare-faced and embracing their natural beauty for social media.

“I really think this empowerment of loving one’s natural skin will have a long-lasting effect and we will see more brides embrace natural looks, focusing more on fresh, glowing skin.”

What Do You Love Most About Your Job?

Made Up by Cathryn

“It truly is the best job in the world and I was missing it so much during the pandemic. Weddings are the prettiest things ever and you can’t not fall in love with the whole wedding world!

“For me, the best part is that I meet that girl initially at the trial, and it is a real journey from the consultation to the finished look. I love nothing more than seeing my bride all dressed knowing that I helped to bring her vision to life, and the reaction when she shows her bridesmaids and her dad before she leaves to marry the love of her life.

“I am a hopeless romantic, so, for me, there’s no better feeling.”

Ganga

“Making people feel good and empowering them, and that’s not just through make-up.

“I love getting to know my clients and helping them through any concerns, anxieties or other feelings they may be reluctant to tell someone close to them.

“I think I’ve become more of a counsellor, but I actually love that part of my job. It’s easy for me to make someone look beautiful, but to make them feel beautiful on the inside and help in a way that make-up can’t is a bigger accomplishment for me – that’s why I do what I do!”

What’s the Best Thing You’ve Seen at a Wedding?

Made Up by Cathryn

“I did a wedding for a bride last year in Anglesey and she was marrying into a very talented family.

“The groom’s sister was Keren Craig, one of the co-designers for luxury couture fashion label Marchesa, and the bride had been to New York to have fittings for her gown and it was exquisite; one of the most beautiful gowns I have ever seen and being the fashion junkie that I am, I was just blown away by the work that went into it – I cried when I saw it!”

Ganga

“A couple re-enacted the way they met in the form of a comic book photoshoot – it was so unique and I had never seen anything like it before.”

What Trend Do You Want to See the Back Of?

Made Up by Cathryn

“Ok, this is a controversial one, but I am so over Boho!

“I’ve been over it for such a long time now, I’ve seen it so much, I’m still seeing it on styled shoots and I just feel now it’s had its day.

“I loved it, but now I am all about the latest looks coming through and am so loving celestial vibes which fit in with the glowing, luminosity in the make-up styles that are currently on-trend.  Then there are botanical vibes, which is a nod to boho but more sophisticated, fresh and modern.”

Ganga

“Inviting people you haven’t kept in touch with or just inviting someone because your parents have known them, but hopefully because of this pandemic and that numbers are/were restricted, this should phase out quite quickly!”

Could You Describe Your Style in a Single Sentence?

Andy Li

“Our style of photography is like a cocktail… the main ingredient is documentary, capturing all the natural and fun moments throughout the day without any forced posing in front of the camera, add to that a splash of awesome sauce and a light coating of creative magic dust on top!”

Alan Law

“That’s a good question, and it seems I’ve already used up my entire sentence-allowance to tell you it’s a good question…!

“Let’s see… I think ‘creative, documentary-focused – where I want to put as much creativity into capturing each and every moment of your day, without controlling or directing you at all’ sums up my style pretty well.”

Emma Latham

“’Joy-seeking, colour-filled, heartfelt and real!”

What’s the Best Aspect of Your Particular Style?

Andy Li

“By capturing a wedding day on the whole, in a documentary style, it allows everyone to enjoy it as much as possible without turning the day into a big photoshoot.

“The photos should all be about the wedding… not vice versa.”

Alan Law

“I think the total freedom it gives to the couple – and everyone else at the wedding – to just totally be themselves.

“To just totally forget about the photography and to relax and enjoy the day, knowing that it’s all being captured creatively and artistically.”

Emma Latham

“That it is chilled and fun and will take you right back to how things really felt.”

OK, let’s see them then, what’s the best photo you’ve taken?

Andy Li

It was very difficult to choose just one photo from the hundreds of weddings that we have captured. We have chosen this amazing photo of Hazel & Patrick on the carousel just after their ceremony at Blists Hill Victorian Town – one of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums in Shropshire. The photo just exudes joy and makes us happy every time we see it!

Andy Li

Alan Law

“Ah, I’m afraid it’s impossible for me to pick just one – I’ve shot over three hundred weddings and taken probably over ten trillion images or something close to that, so I can’t pick a single one.

“One of my current favourite images is this one from 2019, where the brother of the groom had a little ‘accident’ removing the top glass from the champagne tower…”

Alan Law

Emma Latham

“Tough one guys… really tough!

“Probably this one because everything was against me – I was riding a carousel horse backwards, holding on with just my thighs, the lighting was really tough and everything was going up and down and round and round but BOOM! Look at that love right there…”

Emma Latham

What Wedding Trend Do You Hope Disappears in 2021?

Andy Li

“We’re not sure if this is a ‘wedding trend’, however, we have seen people saying in a number of wedding groups on Facebook: ‘I’m meeting my photographer soon, what photographs should I ask them to take… what are the must-have photos?’

“We just want to say: YOU ARE ALL BEAUTIFULLY UNIQUE!

“And your wedding day will be unique. We know it is difficult in modern times when we live and breathe content from social media, but try not to mould your wedding day into something that you have seen online or in a glossy magazine.”

Alan Law

“Currently, the main trend I’d love to see disappear in 2021 is the ‘weddings-not-actually-happening’ trend – that’s got to be the worst one!

“Apart from that, I have to say that I don’t really tend to see many trends; the couples who book me just don’t tend to be concerned with what everyone else is doing, they just want to celebrate their day in the way that makes them happy, rather than worrying about what ‘should’ be done – which I think is great!”

Emma Latham

“Honestly… Sparklers!

“Drunk people wandering around in the dark with super scalding fire sticks scares me. Every. Single. Time!”

Could You Describe Your Style in a Sentence?

Eleven Six Films

“Alternative wedding films for fun-loving party people!”

Dickie Bow Films

“My style is cinematic storytelling; shooting for the light and telling the story of the day in a way that means that no two films are the same.”

What’s the Best Aspect of Your Particular Style?

Eleven Six Films

“We love that our style is pretty unique and miles away from super cheesy or traditional videos.

“Our films are fast-paced and high energy with epic soundtracks, which is perfect for capturing all the good times and party vibes!”

Dickie Bow Films

“The best thing about my style is it is a lot more personable. I’m shooting for the people rather than to a routine, so I am genuinely interested in the people that I work with.”

What’s the Best Thing You’ve Seen at a Wedding?

Eleven Six Films

“Oh, that’s a hard one!

“We’ve seen some amazing dance floor action, and that’s always one of our favourite things to film.

“Last year, we had a wedding with Clanadonia who are an awesomely mental tribal drum and pipe band. It was a hell of a lot of fun to film.”

Dickie Bow Films

“In over three hundred weddings, the best things I see are the connections between people in a comfortable environment.

“This can be a hug, a tear, a scream of joy or some dance moves that click the party together.”

What Wedding Trend Do You Hope Disappears in 2021?

Eleven Six Films

“People sticking to traditions just because they think they have to. It’s your wedding, do it your way!

“Don’t be scared to do your own thing and break from tradition. If you want to rock up to your wedding in the Batmobile, if you want pizza vans instead of a formal meal, if you want a mosh pit or mad rave instead of a cheesy DJ – go for it!”

Dickie Bow Films

“I don’t really follow trends for my work.

“The day and the people I am with dictate the story. And the clients who don’t want trends or gimmicks and want something more personal tend to book me.”

What’s On-Trend for 2021 in the World of Wedding Cakes?

“In 2021 we have seen a lot more floral cakes!

“A new trend we are seeing is the use of dried flowers on cakes. While a yummy wedding cake doesn’t last long around hungry guests, the happy couple will be able to keep their dried flowers forever!”

Can We See a Picture of Your Best Wedding Cake?

“This cake has been a popular design for my 2021 couples. It really shows how a backdrop can make the cake more of a feature in the wedding!”

“It’s extra special seeing their reaction to their wedding cake, luckily they always love it!”

What’s the Best Thing You’ve Seen at a Wedding?

“I once made an Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding cake, and they had an amazing floral archway complete with a rabbit hole!”

What Wedding Trend Do You Hope Disappears in 2021?

“Whilst I love seeing the photographs after the wedding, I worry a lot when I know the bride and groom will be cutting their wedding cake with a sword!”
