New York is huge, thankfully the public transport system that was unusable in the 90's in now in fantastic condition. Much like the London underground, the Metro was once considered dangerous, these days it is tourist friendly but like any big city you should still keep your wits about you.
The best way to navigate it all is with a Metro Card which allows unlimited journeys during a set period much like an UK Oyster Card.
If you are taking a break from shopping and looking for a little something to do then the time of year will play a big part. If you're lucky enough to be in New York for the winter, the skating rink in Central Park is quite a spectacle and a chance to get your skates on.
Summer days a ride on the river down to the Statue of Liberty is really interesting, however it can take a lot of time if you're trying to pack a lot into a short weekend. There are a number of celebrity and movie tours around the city, or you can simply grab a movie map, Metro Card and a camera and hunt down your own movie and TV locations.
A New York hen party will find a city that has a vibrancy and rhythm unlike any other city in the world, this really is the city that never sleeps and there is so much partying to try and fit into one weekend. Times Square and China Town are great places to be at night, and then of course there is Broadway, the beating heart of US theatre.
