Rife with reported paranormal activity and sightings the Coalhouse Fort has long been surrounded by tales of "eerie footsteps" and the "sound of children laughing" as well as dark figures walking around the site. You'll need nerves of steel as even our investigating team have claimed "we have never left the building feeling calm or relaxed by any standards."
The original military use of the site, which was originally marshland dates back 600 years and was created as a defence against French invasion. Under the fort is a maze of deepening tunnels while above ground areas of the fort were used for corporal punishment and hangings. Witnesses have seen items being thrown, chairs moving and investigators consider it one of the most active sites they've encountered.
If you're in search of horrible histories there are few as horrific as Colchester Castle. The original site of the castle has links to the infamous and bloody thirsty Queen Boadicea, Julius Caesar as well as having been home to Saxons.
Perhaps the most terrifying of all was the Witchfinder General with many women having been interrogated, found guilty of and hanged for witchcraft. During a siege in 1648 the castle was captured by Cromwell's troops, the defender's leaders were executed at the back of the castle on a spot where it is said grass will not grow. Beneath the castle ancient Roman vaults have been uncovered with so many nooks and crannies for you to explore...
The simple cottage that marks the site looks perfectly innocuous, however 125ft below ground is situated an expansive, 3 level, decommissioned nuclear bunker that has seen some extraordinary paranormal activity.
Service tunnels, medical rooms, dormitories and offices riddle the site hidden underneath woodland which have recordings and tales of some seriously spooking activity. Could they be linked to the ancient burial site that was disturbed when the bunker was built? With a history like a horror movie script its little wonder the staff who now maintain the site never work alone.
